CHRONO SHINDOU
Cardfight!! Vanguard G CANON 17 AGE
End of series (post-Visual Gift reveals) CANON POINT Male (he/him) GENDER
FIRST IMPRESSIONS
⚙ 168cm (5'6"). He used to be (extra) tiny but really shot up in the last year.
⚙ Birthday September 9th (Virgo)
⚙ Voiced by Mark Ishii
⚙ Messy stoplight-red hair, with that telltale pale-pink swirl. Yes it is always like that. Yes it is still just hair.
⚙ Bright green eyes
⚙ Athletic build, on the skinnier side nvm canon kicked my ass hes actually kinda solid
⚙ Has several small scars on his arms and upper torso - clearly someone who has been through more than average wear and tear, but no major injuries.

⚙ Comes across as a little distant and aloof at first glance, but get him talking and it becomes clear that he's perfectly friendly if you are. His tendency to talk like a delinquent is somewhat at odds with his fastidious personality and polite approach to those older than him. Despite often struggling to verbally express himself, has a perceptive eye and great emotional intelligence. Middling-at-best academic prowess - he passes his classes but finds difficulties with complex math in particular. Hardheaded and forward when set on a goal. Strong competitive streak, easily gets caught up in friendly challenges. Learns concepts quickly, particularly anything related to cognitive subjects. A surprising talent for strategy, but often makes the mistake of pushing for a desperate play when under pressure. Will openly question authority if he gets literally any tiny sense he's being misled or railroaded.

⚙ Destiny Assigned Protagonist. He's accepted his fate, but that doesn't mean he's happy about it.

PERSONALITY
Several years past his moody delinquent phase, Chrono is an ambivert with his heart in the right place. While he can be pensive and introspective if left alone, a Chrono in his element is rowdy, enthusiastic and sociable. Over the years he has become a sort of social chameleon, his awkward soul adept at finding the right places to wedge itself and let his true personality shine. This is the type of guy who seems to lose braincells in a casual group, in a good way! While he hates being left out of the loop and is curious to no end, there's a hypocritical streak where Chrono won't be upfront with others if he feels the need to protect them.

Terrified of true loneliness, Chrono forms strong emotional bonds with those he becomes close to. It's not common for him to seek out new companionship, but he will readily accept offers of it from others. While he tries to appear confident, Chrono has a surprisingly low opinion of himself and reacts awkwardly to praise. Much better with the emotional and actionable than the technical, there's a part of Chrono that constantly questions his own role in the world, and strives to find the answers - exemplified in his Stride chant, "Now reveal it to me, the world I truly desire!"

BACKGROUND
tfw you accidentally become the bridge between worlds bc youre four years old and your dad fucking sucks at his job

With a mother who passed away when he was very young and a father who vanished soon after that, Chrono was raised in an orphanage between the ages of four and eight. Adopted then by his father's younger sister Mikuru, Chrono felt lost in the world - Mikuru worked so hard to support him that the unsociable Chrono began to see himself as only a burden, with little interest in the world around him. In middle school his gloomy personality and stern expression led most other children to avoid him, with few choosing to pick fights instead, which Chrono would win. As a result, Chrono's reputation worsened and his apathy grew.

Then a deck of cards, and a tiny hand-drawn map, appear in his locker.

The map leads Chrono to the local card shop, Card Capital 2. There he meets the clerk, Kamui Katsuragi, who quickly takes the confused and reticent boy under his wing and teaches him how to play Vanguard.

"The cards depict many people and creatures with various abilites who reside on the planet Cray, a world different from ours. You and I have arrived here as powerless astral bodies, but we can embody and summon allies to help us..."

Chrono is shocked to find himself absorbed in the game, easily able to visualise the battles playing out through the ebb and flow of the cardfight. The unique deck he'd been mysteriously gifted, Gear Chronicle, piques the interest of Kamui and many others. Finding himself fascinated in the "alternate future" that Vanguard is proposed to him as, Chrono continues to visit Card Capital 2. Kamui's easy friendship helps him settle into the game and he is given a FICA, then introduced to the quest system.

Over time, Chrono meets many other players, and finds himself able to bond with others for the first time in his life.

ABILITIES & SKILLS
Strength of Mental Image Cognitive power, often referred to as simply "imagination" and able to be harnessed as an energy called "Stride Force". While everyone possesses some (usually extremely minor) level of this, Chrono's ability to visualise is at a level far beyond normal capability. This grants him significant natural resistance to psychic manipulation, a razor-sharp sense for irregularities, and ties into the following ability;
Manifestation With the Depend Cards, now the Twelve Zodiac Time Beasts, Chrono is able to manifest aspects of these units in the physical realm. These are not the original entities from Cray, but rather Chrono's strength of imagination - being used to summon temporary, controlled copies able to interact with their surroundings. These manifestations can last for around two minutes at the upper limit - canonically Chrono has only ever summoned them for seconds, but referencing the two other characters with similar capabilities (one slightly weaker, one slightly stronger) who were able to achieve this provides a frame of reference. Chrono is able to do this with his other, non-ZTB units as well, but only under extreme duress and with little to no control over them. These other manifestations disappear much more quickly.

It is important to note that the manifestation ability causes him to suffer extreme exhaustion and intentional use of it takes a significant toll on his body. Chrono often forgets that he can even use these powers, as he views himself as "a normal Vanguard fighter".
Chance Manipulation Chrono can unconsciously manipulate his own luck to turn chances in his favour. This only applies in high-pressure situations, and he has zero awareness of it - his mental state affects how this ability can resolve. A despairing Chrono will not have the will to manipulate things positively, while a determined or furious one will.
